Preischotel by wim

Preischotel" is the Dutch name for a layered oven dish with leek ("Prei").
It's really good stuff, and quite easy to make (although of course one can never get close to mom's original version ;).
Ingredients for 4 servings
- 1 1/8 pounds of ground beef
- 2 1/4 pounds of potatoes
- 3 leeks
- cheese, the more, the Dutch-er :)
- 1 2/3 cups of Curry Sauce
- breadcrumbs
- milk, for mashed potatoes
- butter
Instructions
Cook the beef and boil the leek in water for about 10 minutes. Also boil the potatoes and prepare the curry sauce. You could make the curry sauce yourself of course, but I prefer using the pre-made packages which only require adding milk or water and heating it up for about 5 minutes. When the potatoes are ready, add some milk and mash the potatoes.
When the leek, beef, curry and mashed potatoes are ready, put it all in the oven dish in the following order: (you might want to grease the oven dish with butter first).
- Start off with a layer of beef.
- On top of this, a layer of mashed potatoes.
- Then a layer of leek, part of the curry sauce and some grated cheese (the more cheese, the more dutch your meal becomes :).
- For the last layer add more mashed potatoes mixed with the remainder of the curry sauce
- Finally add a small layer of breadcrumbs on top.
Make sure not to start off too enthusiastically with a really thick layer of mashed potatoes as the rest is probably not going to fit in your dish afterwards ;).
If you are feeling adventurous you might also try to cook the beef with some unions and/or garlic ;), although i usually leave these out for the sake of simplicity :P.
Put in the oven for about 30 minutes at 355°F (yes, that's Celcius :P). Eet smakelijk!
